The history of eggs for hair

The practice of using eggs, specifically egg yolk, on hair strands has been around for centuries now.

It can be traced back to the 11th century when women first used eggs as natural nourishment for their strands. In the 1940's, people also used egg-infused shampoos in the belief that it would make their hair much stronger and shinier.

Are eggs good for hair?

Eggs contain plenty of vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin A, D, and biotin, all of which are beneficial to your hair.

Here are some of the supposed benefits of using eggs for your hair strands:

  • Strengthens hair. Eggs are very rich in protein, which is basically the same stuff that your hair is made of.
  • Nourishes hair. As mentioned above, eggs have lots of vitamins and minerals that will help nourish your strands from the inside.
  • Makes strands smoother. Egg masks can make your hair instantly smoother since it has lecithin, an enzyme that helps moisturize your hair deeply.
  • Speeds up hair growth. Thanks to all the vitamins and minerals, eggs can also help promote faster hair growth.
  • Treats oily hair. Egg whites contain enzymes that can help thoroughly clean hair by removing any excess buildup, which effectively lessens the oiliness of greasy hair.

That said, do take everything you read with a grain of salt. The majority of these stories are mere anecdotes and there is little research to back up these claims. Nevertheless, using eggs on your strands should be pretty low-risk, except if you have an egg allergy, of course.
